“A place for everything, and everything in its place” – Mrs. Beeton
(The Book of Household Management)
Having a neat and organized home will benefit everyone. You save time with items that are neatly visible, labeled, and easy to find; areas will be clean; and, most importantly, the environment will be safe.
Do you:
store items in the back of the closet, and then forget where you put them?
collect items for years?
have multiple pots and pans?
know what is in your refrigerator or in your pantry?
purchase duplicates of items because you do not realize you have it already?
If you answered, “Yes,” to any of the above questions, then it is time to get neat!
Let's begin with some organizing tips:
Downsizing Your Items - Do not leave this up to your children or friends. Starting now will give you time to enjoy later on. Keep only the things you use.
Clutter Free - This is important for people who are at risk for falls and/or have visual impairments. Place your items in organized areas to prevent hallways from cluttering.
Easily Accessible - If items are stored in hard-to-reach places, think about how often you are using it. Move items that need to be in arm's reach. Avoid storing anything in places where you need to use a stepladder.
Remember, at this stage in your life, less is more!
Refrigerator: Only buy foods you know you are going to use. Store them in containers so they can easily be seen. You can find this great organizing system here.
Lazy Susan: A Lazy Susan is one of the best ways to avoid having to reach in the back of any storage area. The kitchen area is one example of where it can be used. Find it here.
Desk: Keep things you use frequently in easiy accessible places. Limit the amount of things allowed on your desktop.
Clear storage or see-through storage is
Marking hangers is a great strategy to identify items that you do not use. Remove the markers as you wear the clothes. Within six months to one year, any remaining hangers with a marker should be donated. You can also use this strategy with other items using removable colored labels. Get markers here. Get labels here.
Bins/Containers: Label bins/containers to make things easy to find. Doing this is especially helpful for anyone who is encountering issues with their memory.
The organizing process is time consuming and can be challenging. Sometimes it can be very difficult to part with items. Getting some help with this process is available!
